OSMOTIC POWER PLANT-A renewable energy source Norway plans to build the worlds first OSMOTIC POWER PLANT, a renewable energy source that uses the pressure, built between sea water and fresh water.
Osmotic power is based on the natural process of osmosis. In the osmotic power plant, sea water ans fresh water are seperated by a membarane. The sea water draws the fresh water through the membrane, thereby increasing the pressure on the sea water side. The increased pressure is used to produce power with a turbine.
Osmotic power is a very promising technology. It is clean and(green house gas)emmision free, and could become compititive within a few years. The technology could produce some 1,600tetrawatt hours(Twh) worldwide. That is equivalent to 13 times the annual hydroelectric production of norway, which covers almost all its energy needs with hydro power.

With the oceans covering the significant portion of our planet and a large number of countries bounded by seas the osmotic power plants can be our future source of alternate energy.
